One Password, 700 Jobs: The Freight Industry’s Cybersecurity Wake-Up Call

In a devastating example of how fragile digital defences can be, a single compromised password led to the collapse of KNP, a 158-year-old freight and logistics company based in Northamptonshire. The ransomware attack, believed to be carried out by the Akira gang, encrypted the company’s systems and demanded a ransom estimated at £5 million. Unable to pay or recover their data, KNP was forced to shut down, leaving 700 employees without jobs.
The breach reportedly began when hackers guessed an employee’s password. Once inside, they locked the company’s internal systems and issued a chilling ransom note: “If you’re reading this it means the internal infrastructure of your company is fully or partially dead.” Despite having cyber insurance and IT systems that met industry standards, KNP was unable to withstand the attack.
Why Freight and Logistics Are Especially Vulnerable
The freight industry is uniquely exposed to cyber threats. With operations that rely heavily on real-time data, vehicle tracking, and digital scheduling, even a short disruption can cause widespread delays and financial losses. Many logistics firms also operate with legacy systems and distributed teams, making them prime targets for attackers seeking weak points.
Moreover, the sector’s fast-paced nature often leads to overlooked security practices—such as poor password hygiene or unpatched systems. As seen in the KNP case, even a single vulnerability can be catastrophic.
The Growing Threat Landscape
This incident is not isolated. Major UK brands like M&S, Co-op, and Harrods have also fallen victim to cyberattacks in recent months. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) reports dealing with a major cyberattack every day. The National Crime Agency (NCA) has seen incidents nearly double in the past two years, with estimates suggesting 35–40 attacks per week.
The rise in ransomware attacks is fuelled by the accessibility of hacking tools and the increasing use of social engineering tactics. Criminals no longer need deep technical expertise; some gain access simply by tricking IT helpdesks. The government is now considering legislation to ban public bodies from paying ransoms and may require private companies to report attacks and seek permission before making payments.
