Dial-Up
Dial-Up access a basic form of internet connection provided via standard telephone line. Using an analogue modem, the client dials into an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Speed of up to 56Kbps can be achieved, and the service is very reliable.
Broadband
Broadband internet access refers to high speed always on connections which, in contrast to dial-up, does not require the full use of the telephone line. Often provide by the use of a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), technology which enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional modem can provide. It does this by utilizing the full range of frequencies available. DSLs are available in various specifications, most notable ADSL and SDSL.
ADSL - (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) - is a variant of Broadband where the download and upload speeds are different; hence 'Asymmetric' in the acronym. Typically the download speed is the faster at up to 8Mpbs, with upload speeds between 128 and 768Kpbs up. For surfing the internet, sending and receiving e-mails and general WAN connectivity an ADSL line is cost effective method. Also because it uses the higher frequencies on the copper line, an analogue phone/fax line and be used simultaneously.
SDSL - (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line) - an alternative to ADSL where the Upload and Download speeds are identical. SDSL is available at 512K, 1M or 2Mpbs, provided on a dedicated line. Suitable for customers with large data rates both up and down. Especially as the fixed contention rate guarantees the speed, even at times of peak usage.
